Inspecting For Mold

Disclaimer: The Healthy Housekeeper recommends a certified mold inspector to do the testing. If you lack the funds to hire one, you should purchase educational materials to you about the hazards of mold testing. The Healthy Housekeeper will be held harmless from any liabilities and lawsuits resulting from any attempts made by individuals who choose to inspect their own homes for mold and do the mold remediation process. The information on this website is considered to be a resource for information only, not a mold remediation source.

Inspecting for mold is the first step to determine if you have a problem and if so, how big the problem is. I recommend that you educate yourself as much as possible on the subject. The differences between you inspecting your home for mold and a certified inspector inspecting your home for mold are many. Certified inspectors have been trained to look for mold and they know the most likely places where mold grows. They are successful in finding hidden mold contamination because they are able to use all of the appropriate mold testing methods such as careful physical inspection, controlled air testing [Air-O-Cell], mold culture plates [air and hvac testing], carpet samplers [Air-O-Cell brand], clear Scotch tape lift samples of visible mold, swab samples of visible mold, hidden moisture detectors, hygrometer [measure humidity], and a fiber optics inspection system [to look for mold inside walls and ceilings].

You can go to www.moldinspectorcom to learn more about these tests or to order their book "Mold Buster Tips" on mold inspecting and remediation. There are other mold test kits available from . The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also has a new booklet for free called, "A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home" order it at: or request a copy by phone at (800) 438-4318.
